Metallic epoxy is a decorative system. Reflective pigment is suspended in a clear or tinted resin, and as the resin cures the pigment migrates, pools and separates. We influence that movement with our application technique, but do not fully control it. That is the point of the finish and it is also its limitation: the finished pattern will vary, and it will not look exactly like the sample.

Metallic epoxy flooring suits spaces where the finish is a design feature. For floors exposed to forklift traffic, look at the commercial systems instead.

Metallic epoxy finishes for homes and businesses

Available finish families depend on the system selected for your project. The main options are:

Single-color metallic. One pigment through a clear resin. The depth comes from how the pigment settles rather than from color contrast. The most forgiving of the three and the easiest to keep consistent across a large area.

Multi-color blends. Two or more pigments worked together while the resin is open. More visual movement, more dependent on installer technique, and harder to match across separate pours.

Marble and vein effects. Deliberate manipulation of the pigment to create veining and cells. The most labor-intensive and the most variable.

The appearance you get depends on the substrate underneath, the pigments, our application method, the ambient conditions during the pour, the lighting in the room, and the topcoat. A photograph taken in a showroom under different lights is a guide, not a specification. Ask for a sample panel made with your pigments before the floor is committed.

Is metallic epoxy right for your space?

Good fits. Interior residential spaces, home offices, basements and finished garages where appearance leads. Showrooms, salons, boutiques, reception areas, and studios. Anywhere the floor is a design element and the traffic is people rather than machinery.

Poorer fits. Areas with heavy point loads, dragged equipment, or dropped tools, because a scratch in a metallic topcoat is visible in a way that a scratch in a flake floor is not. Wash-down areas and spaces with aggressive chemical exposure. Anywhere exposed to direct, sustained sunlight, since color stability is a topcoat property and needs to be confirmed from the data sheet rather than assumed.

Where a different system serves better. If your garage is a working garage, a flake or quartz broadcast system hides wear far better and costs less. If the space is a facility rather than a showroom, the commercial systems are specified against use rather than appearance.

Metallic finishes can be installed in a garage. Many are. Just be clear with yourself about which of those two things you are buying.

How a metallic floor is prepared and installed

  1. Assessment. Inspect the slab for cracks, contamination, previous coatings and moisture. Metallic systems are usually thin, so surface defects telegraph through.
  2. Profile and repairs. Mechanically grind the concrete to the profile the system requires, then fill and treat cracks and spalls. Repairs need to be flat, because the metallic layer will not hide a bump.
  3. Moisture review. Test where the slab or its history warrants it. A vapor problem under a decorative floor is an expensive discovery.
  4. Base coat. A pigmented base, usually in a color that supports the metallic layer rather than fighting it.
  5. Metallic coat. The pigmented resin goes down and is worked while it is open. This is the step where the floor gets its character and where our experience shows.
  6. Protective topcoat. One or more clear coats. This is what you actually walk on and what determines scratch resistance, UV behavior, sheen and cleanability. It is worth as much attention as the decorative layer.
  7. Cure and inspection. Foot traffic, then furniture, on the product's schedule.

What affects the cost of a metallic epoxy floor

  • Area, and how much of it is edge and detail work
  • Substrate condition, and how much grinding, filling and leveling is needed before a decorative layer can go down
  • Number of pigments and the complexity of the effect, since vein work is slow hand labor
  • Sample panels, if you want to see the combination before committing
  • Edge details, coves and thresholds
  • Topcoat selection, number of coats, sheen level and any anti-slip additive
  • Moving and protecting furniture, and access to the space
  • Protection of the floor during cure, particularly on an occupied site
  • Schedule, if the work has to happen outside normal hours

Metallic systems sit at the higher end of decorative flooring because most of the cost is skilled labor rather than material. Generic per square foot figures do not survive contact with a real floor. Send your details.

Caring for your metallic epoxy floor

Day to day maintenance is straightforward: dust mop, then damp mop with a neutral pH cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads and avoid anything that etches, which includes some common household cleaners. Felt pads under furniture legs. Mats at entry points to catch grit, since grit is what dulls a clear topcoat.

Repairs have an important limitation. A scratch in the topcoat can often be addressed by recoating an area, but a damaged metallic layer cannot be spot-repaired invisibly, because the pattern cannot be reproduced. Plan for eventual recoating of the topcoat rather than for touch-ups.

Full care instructions come from the manufacturer of the installed system. We provide the written warranty and its conditions at completion; using an unapproved cleaning product may affect coverage.

One caution about how decorative work is marketed. Photographs of a metallic floor prove that someone can make a beautiful surface. They say nothing about abrasion resistance, chemical resistance or service life. Treat the photographs as evidence of appearance, and use product data sheets to evaluate abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and service life.
