Surface preparation determines how well the coating bonds to the concrete.

The top layer of a finished concrete slab is weaker than the concrete below it. Mechanical profiling, by grinding or shot blasting, removes that weak layer and cuts a texture for the coating to key into. Skipping it, or substituting an acid wash, is the most common reason a garage floor peels in sheets a year later.

Alongside that: existing coatings get tested and usually removed, cracks and joints get treated according to whether they are still moving, contaminated areas get degreased or ground out, and the slab gets checked for moisture where its history or condition suggests a problem.
