Preparing your concrete floor for coating

Surface preparation determines how well the coating bonds to the concrete.

The top layer of a finished concrete slab is weaker than the concrete below it. Mechanical profiling, by grinding or shot blasting, removes that weak layer and cuts a texture for the coating to key into. Skipping it, or substituting an acid wash, is the most common reason a garage floor peels in sheets a year later.

Alongside that: existing coatings get tested and usually removed, cracks and joints get treated according to whether they are still moving, contaminated areas get degreased or ground out, and the slab gets checked for moisture where its history or condition suggests a problem. A vapor drive under a coating will push it off from underneath no matter how good the product is.

Estimate factors: area, preparation, repairs, moisture mitigation, system layers, finish, texture, edge details, access and storage, protection, disposal, and cure or return-to-use requirements.

The Union Central District Plan names North Kenwood among neighborhoods within or adjacent to its study area and separately identifies the Grand Central District. City Fire Rescue's Station 10 serves the Kenwood and Ponce De Leon neighborhoods. These are administrative and civic references. They do not define a service boundary or say anything about the properties inside them.

Flooring projects and installation team

Ask us for these, and verify them yourself rather than taking them from a website:

  • License. Ask us for the applicable license classification and number, then verify it through the state lookup.
  • Insurance. Request current certificates.
  • Manufacturer qualifications. Ask whether training or approved-installer status applies to the proposed system.
  • Completed work. Ask to see projects identified by space, system and date.
  • Warranty. Request the written terms and exclusions.

We do not claim a North Kenwood office or neighborhood-based crew. We cover St. Petersburg and confirm service for the address during the estimate.

North Kenwood epoxy flooring FAQs

Am I in North Kenwood or Historic Kenwood?

They are separate neighborhood records. If you are unsure, note that on the form and we will confirm the address against the City's neighborhood information.

How do I know if my slab has a moisture problem?

Signs include persistent dark patches, white powdery deposits, and a previous coating that lifted in sheets. Testing settles it.

Is grinding necessary, or can you acid etch?

Mechanical profiling is what the system requires. Etching does not produce the same profile and is a frequent cause of early failure.

Can you match a color?

Within the pigment range of the product. Ask for a sample before committing.

How long is the floor out of use?

Product-specific and weather-dependent. Get the schedule in the proposal.
